First Semester at College

The first semester is over! I truly love LCAD. I learned so much this semester from all my classes and made all new friends. I'm so thankful to have been accepted and to have these new learning opportunities. Here's some of my better work from my first semester at college!

1.

2.
These two still lifes are my two better ones. The first one was done in class (1) and the last one (2) was done in the dorms.

2.
These were from my figure drawing class. The top one (1) was done from a photograph as part of our final while the other (2) was done in class from life.

This is my final from Digital painting. We had to create a black and white rendered image from our imagination then go over it with a cool and warm setting.

Digital Painting

Here's some pictures I worked on in Digital Painting. I still have to take pictures of some drawings from my other classes. I've been so busy lately and the days/months seem to blur together when you're in art school.
Anyways, college is really fun but a lot of work. You can never be totally prepared for what's going to happen and how long it will take when it comes to homework. I've got all good grades (A's and B's) but that does imply that I stay up till 3 or 5 working on it and wake up early to finish if I haven't. Digital Painting is by far the most time consuming of my homework. I've never used Photoshop before so it takes me at least 12-24 hours to finish something. Now I'm getting faster so it only takes 9. Here's my work up to date.

College Update

Hello everyone! It's been a while since I've posted! It's now the third week of school and I love it! My favorite class is Fundamentals of Figure Drawing and the pictures I've attached are from the second day in class. I also love Acting for Animators because I love acting and all the fun games we play. Our first homework assignment was to lip synch which was really wacky and enjoyable.
My other classes include: Composition and Color Digital, English Composition, Math-Science-Art, and College Skills.

The first picture is from Fundamentals of Painting Digital. This was my first Photoshop painting so I'm very proud of it.

Here's my quick still life from Fundamentals of Drawing. We're focusing right now on proportion and detailed contour line drawing. Right after that I transition into Figure Drawing where we focus more on gestures and quick movement, even if the proportions aren't correct.

Cute Kids

Cute Kids
18" x 24"
Charcoal and pencil

This was my second to last portrait done this summer in Loveland. I really enjoyed drawing these kids because they are so cute! I was so happy I had the chance to meet them when I dropped off the portrait. What I loved most was drawing the eyes and the clothing, even though the clothing was the hardest to draw. All in all, I'm glad this was one of the last portraits of the summer.

1st from Life (summer 2014)

Life-drawing
18" x 24"
Charcoal, pencil, pastel
I know I haven't done a post in over a month. I have a week left until I go to college!!!
I have done portraits from life before, however this is the first and only one from this summer. I did the portrait in just around an hour because I really enjoyed talking to the model which means I took breaks here and there to chat. The model was very patient and kind and also an enthusiastic artist herself! It was fun drawing her portrait.

Joy

Joy
18"x 24"
Charcoal/pencil
This is a picture I did really recently of a friend. I took the picture years ago, but I pulled it out and thought it turned out really well. He looks so happy and he was so much taller than me which is why the picture is looking up at him. Someone already told me he looks like a rapper and he is in fact a musician!- a great one!

This picture was really fun to do as a surprise anniversary gift. Wonderful family and a pleasure drawing them.

This is a very recent commission I finished for a friend. The baby is adorable! I love children's eyes because they show so much wonder and are so innocent!

High School Senior Insanity!

I've been very busy the last few months getting ready for college. Yay!!! I'm going to Laguna College of the Art and Design in Character animation! These are some of the drawings I submitted for my portfolio.
This character has been with me for a while, though I haven't drawn him until now. His name is Makhleb and he is the sole antagonist to my protagonist, Sebria. Kind of like the Joker and Batman or Moriarty and Sherlock! ^-^
These are just a few of my emotions-- I actually don't know about "drunk" since I've never been drunk, but I'm basing it on what I've seen in movies.
Here's a collage of drawings from my sketchbook. I attend several local life drawing class with awesome artists! I also draw a lot from life. I try and look for the line of action in the pose and form-- as my wonderful mentor Ellen Woodbury taught me--- then I add the solids like the head, ribs, and hips. What I aim to do is capture the essence of a pose-- I also try to be quick about it. Most of these were maybe 5 minute poses.
Here are some practice sketches of dogs. I don't do animals that much, but I know I'm gonna need to learn a lot about them and their physical structure. A lot of these quick gestures were from either watching my two dogs or from videos posted on New Masters Academy-- a really great website for artists of all ability levels and mediums.
Like I did with the dogs, I watched my neighbor's horses and sketched them while they were riding them. I also obtained valuable information from watching an episode on horses at New Masters Academy.
I worked on this drawing with the wonderful Ellen Woodbury! She had me do several versions of this pose until I captured the essence and movement. I found it surprisingly difficult to think like an animator. For one sketch I have to be thinking about not only the pose, but also the line of action, attitude, squash and stretch, movement, overlap, etc... There were four layers to this drawing (pink, light blue, medium blue, dark blue) before I got the final result.
These are just sketches of the many animals in my backyard. We have six chickens and one rooster. They're fun to watch and draw! The rooster's name is Honey and he only has one wing because he tore it off as a baby. They're pretty old now-- 4-- so they aren't really that active. As I mentioned, I have two dogs and, up until a few months ago, we had three cats. Now we only have two.
